Mrs. Barbara Scratch, B.Ed., Teacher
Mrs. Scratch hails from Estevan, Saskatchewan, where she obtained a commercial certificate from Estevan Collegiate Institute after graduating from high school. She moved to Calgary in 1970 and initially worked as a secretary prior to going back to school and receiving her Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Calgary which qualified her for a Level 3 designation in Early Childhood Education from the Alberta Daycare Association. Before, during and after university, Mrs. Scratch worked for Briar Hill Children's Programs as their Program Coordinator and the assistant to the Executive Director. Immediately following university, she worked for one year as a teaching assistant for the community operated kindergarten. For many years following that, she simultaneously worked for the daycare and taught Kindergarten at Briar Hill School. Mrs. Scratch has now worked in early childhood programs for twenty-six years at Briar Hill -twenty-one years in daycare and twenty years as our much loved kindergarten teacher. Barb Scratch was nominated for an Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997.

Mrs. Scratch loves teaching because she says that when the light of understanding sparkles in a young child's eyes, she knows that she has just given them something that they will be able to use and extend toward future learning and understanding, and there is no better reward than that.

Barb Scratch lives in the Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill community, and her own two boys are Briar Hill School graduates. When she's not teaching she enjoys music, camping, china painting, reading, and family get-togethers.

Pauline Stafford, Teacher's Aide
Pauline has been working at Briar Hill School for 12 years, nine of which have been spent as a Teacher's Aide in our Kindergarten program. Pauline feels that the students, staff and parents at Briar Hill School are her extended family and enjoys the great atmosphere of the entire school. She loves working with the children. Pauline has a vibrant and playful attitude and brings a lot of fun to the classroom (not to mention a cool British accent). Pauline is a patient and caring individual who really connects with children.

Pauline was born in England and moved to Canada when she was 16 years old. She is the mother of one, and in her free time she loves to quilt and watch her son play soccer.
